When a herd of Zebra is being stocked by predators, their stripes create positive and negative shapes when the herd runs about in confusion. this is highly confusing to the predator who is trying to single out a Zebra to kill.
Just as we humans can identify ourselves from finger prints, Zebras identify one another from their stripes while Giraffes identify each other from their patches.
